Well known producer and member of the group Playa, Static Major died yesterday (February 25, 2008) from a brain aneurism. Static Major, born Stephen Garrett, has worked with artists like David Banner, Ginuwine and Jay-Z. But he was mainly known for producing hits for the late Aaliyah including the hit, “Are you that somebody?”
Here at MMIM our condolences go out to his family and friends. This is a great loss to the music world.

We have been talking about the death and contributions of Static over at Highbrid Nation. I really am curious as to the reason why such a talented guy died so suddenly.

I came from a generation of those who have grown up with Aaliyah, Playa, Timbo, Miss E., Mr. Lumpkin, etc. This team of artists showed back then they were here to stay when they were able to shine during the era of the ’36 Chambers’ {WU Tang Clan}..and for the avid music love in me, I must say that this was a hard hit for me….I have always been a fan of good production and support the likes of Mr. Garrett. For him to pass is for music to take a heavy shot in the heart. I love this site because you are free to express yourself whole heartedly and I will go on to say, that I know Static is up there rockin with babygirl again and that gives me great happiness because I know that one day when we get to meet them, we will have even more great music to hear…..rest in peace my brotha.

I remember when Static was a solo artist in Jodeci producer/songwriter/mastermind…Davante Swing’s Basement Crew when he got Swing Mob Records..Timbaland was Davante’s production protege, he helped craft the stronger more funked out sound on “Diary of A Mad Band”…Missy was the lead singer of the group Sista…unfortunately, that whole thing crumbled..Missy and Timberland..worked with 702, Ginuwine, and of course Aaliyah…Static wrote alot of songs with Missy for Aaliyah..”One in A Million”..he was in the video chilling with Playa, who had moderate success…no stand out vocalist but their music was always tight..well written and produced…nowadays, very few artists produce and write..or most producers and writers are being wasted by writing tiresome crap that sounds like everything else..listen to Ginuwine’s “The Bachelor” and Aaliyah’s “One in a Million”..look at the liner note credits…that is his legacy..Grammy nominated and billboard Chart topping material.
