This is Janelle Monae single off her album Metropolis: The Chase Suite. This video is very interesting. The end of the video confusing me a lot. I would love to hear her concept behind it. But her energy is crazy and I love how she moon walks towards the end. Let us know your thoughts.
Swagger Like Us Part 2 or the remix, what some may call, is on its way. According to SOHH, 50 cent, Nas, Andre 3000, and Jeezy will be recruited for the track. I can’t wait for this to be released. The original was hot and to imagine adding Andre 3000, Nas, and Jeezy. I’m not really a 50 fan but regardless its something to look forward to. Of course, MMIM will keep you posted on the details of this track and we will post when we receive it.
From the the first time I heard Jazmine’s voice, I knew this girl was going to blow people away. She did just that for me. Her voice is so powerful that you won’t believe that she only 23 years old. Jazmine can not only sing, but she is a talented songwriter and has been writing for years. MMIM had the pleasure to sit down to chat with Jazmine, about her Lauryn Hill comparisons and her debut album, Fearless.
MMIM: How does it feel being compared to Lauryn Hill?
JS:I am a huge fan of Lauryn. I look up to her as a artist. I have listened to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill like a billion and one times, just like everyone else did. But it doesn’t hurt when people say that people because I respect her definitely. I know the comparisons is there because of the Reggae vibe on “Need U Bad.” I know once people hear the rest of my album, Fearless, they will see that we are two totally different artists and people will hopefully respect me for who I am and see that I have something different to offer.
MMIM: You are preparing for a huge tour with Maxwell. How does that feel?
JS: It feels sooooo good. I am so honored, first of all to be on a tour with somebody like Maxwell. Not only that, its beneficial to me because everybody is coming to see Maxwell. Hopefully I will get some new fans because of that. I’m excited to see him my own self.
MMIM: Have you had a chance to watch the youtube video of Brandon Hines covering your track, “I’m In Love With Another Man”. Brandon actually switched the name and called it “I’m In Love With Someone Else”.
JS: Really? I haven’t seen it.
MMIM: Well he did an excellent job, but how does that make you feel knowing that your songs are being covered with you being a new artist and your debut album has not been released? (*at the time, Jazmine’s album was not released)
JS: It feels really good. When people remake a song that means they love the song, and they want to be apart of it in some special way. So I feel honored that people love it that much to do “their own thing” to it.
MMIM: For your debut album, were there any songwriters or producers that you worked with? Any features?
JS: A lot of producers. Of course Missy Elliot who did the first single and another cut off the album called “Dream Big”. Saalam Remi, Jack Splash, Stargate, Dirty Harry, and Anthony Bell. We didn’t get any features on this album, its basically just me. I wrote the whole album so I’m really proud of it.
MMIM: So I know you written songs for other artists. Your most famous is Christina Millian’s “Say I”. I had the chance to watch the youtube video of that performance and you did amazing!
JS: Thank you (laughs)!
MMIM: What other artists did you have the opportunity to write for?
JS: Well just recently, I did some work for Queen Latifah for her new album. I co-wrote Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia new song. I really, really focused on myself.
MMIM: Last but not least, how can your fans reach out to you?
JS: You can definitely go on my myspace – thank you so much everybody for myspace and for supporting me and my record. But www.myspace.com/jazminesullivan or you can go to my website www.jazminesullivanmusic.com or you can call 215-789-4753, get updates of when I’ll be in your city with the Maxwell tour and what’s going on with Jazmine.
MMIM: This is your cell number?
JS: Yep, that’s my cell!
Below is the youtube video of Jazmine performing “Say I”.
I came across a list this morning that was put together by VH1 – Top Hip Hop Songs Ever. The list will be a series of shows beginning from #100 all the way to #1. The top 5 songs were released, and Public Enemy made the #1 spot with their song “Fight the Power.” Salt N Pepa was the only female in the top 10. Some of my favorites didn’t make the list but you got to remember this is of all time, and some were before my age.
1. Public Enemy – Fight the Power
2. Sugarhill Gang – Rapper’s Delight
3. Dr. Dre – Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang
4. Run DMC – Walk This Way
5. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s – The Message
Let us know what you think. If you had to make a top 5 list, who and what songs would make it?
We sure didn’t see this one coming. Amerie’s third album Because I Love It was released last year overseas, now her label has decided to release it next Tuesday here at home. If you remember, she released one single (Take Control) from this album in the US, but that was it. So be on the look out for Because I Love It on September 30, I know I will.
Kanye fans get EXCITED! According to Ye’s blog he is moving up the launch date for his upcoming album 808s and Heartbreaks to November.
Kanye’s reason for moving up the album is as follows, “I changed my album to November something cause I finished the album and I felt like it…I want yall to hear it as soon as possible.”
Gotta love YE for keeping it real and giving us what we need.
On September 18, Rolling Stone gave Ms. Janelle Monae a “4 star” review for her single Many Moons. They called her “the female Outkast” and even touched on her fashion sense and compared her much to Andre 3000.
You can listen to the single here. Let MMIM know what you think about this review. Was it well deserved? I say its about time that this talent has been recognized…even for a song that has a “uncommon” sound.
This week we are going back to 1993…the Throwback Joint is from a group called”Arrested Development” This one was definitely a classic. Check out Tennessee.

Hip Hop legends, Run DMC, have been nominated to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The 2009 program will include a series of events that will last for a week and the induction ceremony ending on Saturday, April 4. Tickets for the events will first be available to the Rock and Rock Hall Museum members and then open to the public.
Congrats to Run DMC for the nomination! They should definitely be inducted.
Word is that Miss Princess of R & B, Ashanti, will be releasing another album real soon – October 14 to be exact.
“The Vault” will be an album of 12 unreleased tracks that Ashanti has recorded over the years. I am looking forward to see what Ashanti has recorded over the years of her career. You will definitely see the growth on this upcoming album.
MMIM: Tell the MMIM Readers who Smit Rock is. SR: Smit Rock is a person first and foremost. Just basically an artist that can tell a whole story. Not many people can tell a whole story. You normally see an artist that says he played really good in basketball. He would probably compromise that for the street if he was doing both or vice versa. With me I did not compromise anyone of my lifestyles and for that reason I can tell a whole story. From my past to where I am at right now I have a broad reality and I can speak from a lot of different perspectives. That is who I am and that is what I deliver creatively through music.
MMIM: How were you discovered? SR: I was actually discovered by Steve Francis. He had a friend that heard me and he liked me, so he introduced me to Steve while he was doing music. From there I was able to meet all of the people from Houston like Bun B, artists from Rap-A-Lot Records, and J-Prince. From there I was messing with DJ Jealousy and Walt Williams. Then I got discovered by Chucky Thompson through a college friend that is from here. My old coach knew Chucky Thompson, gave him my CD and within a week I was in his office and he said he wanted to sign me.
MMIM: I have read that both of your parents are visual artists. Were they or are they still heavily into music and how has that influenced your music career? SR: My mother is not really into music as much anymore, since she got saved. My father has always been into music when I was younger he played African, jazz, and blues – all types of music. He just wanted me to really be connected and know how powerful music is. Its effecting me because I am able to deliver a message and able to create music from a lot of different angles and execute a lot of different sounds.
MMIM: When did you realize that you wanted to pursue music? SR: When I was about 12. I always had a gift to speak to people. When I was in high school and a lot of people were losing their jobs – I made a speech that saved two people’s jobs. The speech came from the heart. When I am holding a microphone I know I can speak. At first music was therapy for me,but I realized that I could use it as a tool to lead people and make a difference in the world for those individuals that count to me.
MMIM: How has it been working with Chucky Thompson? SR: It has been a blessing working with Chucky first and foremost because he really brings out the artist in you. Whatever you are going through in life he is able to basically push you and show you how to translate that into music or a melody. He pushes you hard and does not let you settle for average or good. Working with Chucky makes you become twice as good just to get an equal shot and you kind of realize that. And when you work to be twice as good you always end up better.
MMIM: Do you have any upcoming projects and if so can you tell us about them? SR: We got mix tapes coming out and I am working on an album. The album is actually almost finished. I am getting radio play on my singles and we plan to work on a couple of shows in Houston and D.C.
MMIM: What would be your first single off of the album? SR: My first single that I released to the streets was this record called Look at Me featuring Bun-B. The people chose this single. With the record industry it’s like certain records are cool, but you have to have a break out record. That was a high energy record that the DJ’s and the people clung to.
MMIM: As an artist within this industry. How would you define success? SR: When you come into this game whatever your values and goals are if you accomplish them and stick to your principles and don’t sacrifice them throughout the game. It’s also about reaching the people that you want to reach and getting your point across to those people through your music.
MMIM: Do you ever feel like you have to compromise who you are in order to succeed in the music industry? SR: No because I feel like that would damage my character and my career. The best thing for
me to do as an artist is to be myself and put my total self out there. When you try to do
something different or fit into a category you end up like everyone else. I feel very comfortable
being totally me and giving the world Smit Rock.
MMIM: Can you tell us about your first performance. SR: My first performance was a long time ago. I was featured on somebody’s song. The Straightface click here in DC where they did a show with Juvenille when he had the “Bounce Back” single and I was able to perform.
MMIM: You had a listening party on August 14th. How was the music received and did you receive feedback on any of the songs while you were there or after the party? SR: Yes people told me that they liked my energy when I presented my song. They also told me that they liked the song and wanted to know if how they could continue to hear my music. All of the feedback was positive.
MMIM: How can your fans reach out to you? SR: They can call this number (Laughs). Just Kidding. They can reach me through email at smitty27@tmail.com or through MySpace .
MMIM: Do you have anything else that you would like to share with our readers? SR: I just want to let the MMIM readers to look out for the movement with Black Diamond and Chucky Thompson and support the movement because DC has not had a powerful movement in making an impact within the hip-hop game. We have the opportunity to step up and get behind this movement so that we can represent DC as well as the tri-state right.
