At the time when female rappers have become endangered species, Ms. Angel Lola has decided to begin her rapping career. Not many details have surfaced about her upcoming album, but we do know that she will go by the name “Ms. Lola”. Below are a few promo pics for her album and a video of her rapping one of her tracks (Boss Bitch) at her recent birthday party.

In the middle of a shopping center in College Park, MD, Paul “Young Swagger” Baker spits more bars than “a million pair of Adidas” -the same amount Canibus proclaimed to have spit in 1998. The Washington, D.C. native raps and uses his body language long enough to spark excitement, smirks and serious head-nods from a crowd of hip-hop lovers and The Famous Firm C.E.O. and past director of A&R at Atlantic Records, Sickamore.
After the job is done, Sickamore smiles and says with confirmation, “I never heard somebody go that hard.” After years and years of practice, a craft that seems so simple to display, has only come easy after hard work and dedication. Short days and long nights were dedicated to his love for music and semblance of Tupac Shakur, Shawn Carter and Christopher Wallace would become staples of what to look for in an emcee. After studying their sound, deliveries and rhyme schemes, Young Swagger created the perfect formula for becoming the world’s greatest emcee. He would use drugs called, “conviction” and “truth,” to grab the attention of hip- hop addicts and create a base that would boil into hardcore, honest music. His product would speak for itself. It would sell and create a buzz.

MMIM: How did you feel leaving school to pursue music?
YS: I felt like the the pressure was on but I was ready for my destiny. Rap is the first basket I put all my eggs into. I think I would rather have this pressure then being in an office being pressured to do something I didn’t love to do.
MMIM: Tell us why you chose the name ‘Young Swagger?”
YS: That’s just what the streets deemed me when I was coming up on the battle circuit…I would put my on money up to battle folks and after a few people got bodied then folks began to get scared…The confidence in my talents brought about the name swagger.
MMIM: Who are your musical influences?
YS: Pac…..I love the passion in his music, T.I….is the one of the all around best in the game, Jay-Z….as a rapper we should all to aspire to have the career he had from top to bottom. He is the pinnacle of Hip-Hop, Biggie…even though he was cut short he was undeniable in his greatness
MMIM: What projects are you working on, can you give us any details?
YS: Debut mixtape…and just in the lab working with the best producers trying to make the best music I can for the moment. Also I’m doing features on some other up and coming artists projects.
MMIM: What obstacles have you faced trying to pursue your passion, which is music?
YS: Well my team and I finance all the things we do so it can become strenuous especially when you do this 24/7….As any other street individual I’ve lost soldiers in the streets but it serves as motivation to keep pushing….also just trying to break in this industry is tough but I have a good team and we will grind till we cant grind anymore.
MMIM: How can your fans reach out to you or know more about Young Swagger?
YS: www.myspace.com/youngswaggdc and i have youtube clips under my name young swagger….and in the DMV I am everywhere lol…for those in other cities I will be coming to a city near you hopefully.
Check out the video Diva from Beyonce’s I Am…Sasha Fierce. I must say although I am not a huge fan of her album, I do like this song a lot. Let MMIM know if you are feeling this video or not. Be sure to come back once we post Halo, which is also set to be released today.

I am just so tired of material being released from this album (Good Girl Gone Bad). Rihanna needs to go ahead an release another album, there have already been eight singles released from this album, and it was re-released earlier this year.
Now the folks at Def Jam have decided to release Good Girl Gone Bad: The Remixes. Twelve of Rihanna songs have been remixed including “Take A Bow”, “Disturbia”, “Breakin’ Dishes” and of course, “Umbrella.”
Good Girl Gone Bad: The Remixes will be released on January 27 and hopefully Rihanna can begin to work on a new album.
Happy Holidays to all music lovers! This week’s throwback is brought to you by the talented ladies of TLC with their holiday hit single “sleigh Ride” which came out back in ’93. This song reminds me of my high school days, hanging out with all my family and friends going shopping as well as helping mom cook that big dinner to get ready for the big day. During the era of the ‘90s good music was brought to us and wish we could bring a lot of that back into the current.
Christmas is a beautiful time of year and we at MMIM wish you all a happy and safe holiday. Let’s celebrate music as we make the transition into the New Year!

Here is a video to get you in the Christmas mood (if you aren’t already)…Raphael Saadiq was here in DC recently and performed “Merry Christmas Baby”. Check it out below.

Here are two tracks that didn’t make Ms. Sullivan’s debut album Fearless. Not really feeling A Life Without Love, but I’m loving My Little Black Book.

I wasn’t sure if this should have been an “Original vs. Remake” seeing that Framing Hanley is a different genre than the original. But they had the opportunity to cover Lil’ Wayne’s Lollipop and even though I am so sick of this song, I can listen to Framing Hanley’s version over and over. Let us know what you think. The video is kinda long so the song starts at the 2:18 mark. Enjoy!

Miss Solange Knowles has come a long way with her musical talents and style. So with that being said, her lyrics in her song titled “This Bird” were analyzed. Her album does a good job of capturing that classic soul sound; and this particular song consists of Solange singing over the track “Slow This Bird Down” originally done by “Boards of Canada,” which happens to be an album full of some good sounds as well. To keep my analytical attempt general, I feel Solange may be referring to her coming up as a young lady, witnessing the many influences in life that can either make you or break you. Making the right life choices; how she may not be a saint, but in the same token, she’s not out doing wrong, so not matter what she’s going to live and reach her reaches her goals.

“Once in a time
Where the girls feel like girls
And the world is painted
Cotton candy
Where the sweet lemonade
Of mcgregor street
Was the best the damn thing of the summer breeze
Your dad drives a foreign car
And your mama looks like a beauty queen
Now the sour bitter days
Of a colorless place
Seems to light up my nights somehow
And the music I play must be loud, loud, loud, loud, loud as can be
So I don’t have to hear myself think
So I don’t have to wake up from this dream
I don’t wanna sing no single mama blues
I’m not singin look at me I’ve been abused
O I’m honestly lost girl starin at you
So maybe ill put on my high heel shoes
And soar the night away
And soar the night away
But whatever I do
I’m not gonna slow this bird down
I don’t wanna look life in the eye
I’m not gonna fall face first in the spiral called a life
I’m not in denial
I’m not suicidal
Not an alcoholic
I’m not out here whoring
So just shut the f**k up
This birds not slowing down
Once in a while
When the sun does its job
Lets the clouds take a nice day off
I can breeze through the day”
Let MMIM know your thoughts of what Solange may be referring to in this song.
MMIM had the pleasure of interviewing fellow DMVer Chris Wright, who is an up and coming producer and member of the hot band Mambo Sauce. Chris recently received news that his work on Ludacris’s Wish You Would track is being nominated for a Grammy. Check out the track below after reading the interview and be sure to leave Chris some love.
MMIM: First off congratulations on the Grammy nomination for your collaboration with Ludacris. How did that whole project come about and how did you feel when you heard the news?
CW: Well. the ludacris situation came about after a chance meeting between 88(also formerly of northeast groovers and founding member of 8trix productions) and Ludacris. He played some tracks for Luda and the rest is history! When I first found out about Ludacris being intersted in our music I was very excited. Later I found out that T.I was gonna be on the track as well. I was super excited. Then when I found out the song was nominated for a grammy I was……extremely excited!
MMIM: How long have you bee playing the keyboard, as well as making beats. Do you prefer making music for go-go bands versus hip hop music?
CW: I’ve been playing keyboard since about 1996, so thats about 13 years. I didnt start doing beats until maybe 2001. So, thats about 7 or 8 years doing production. I love playing gogo music, but production allows me to be more creative. I guess thats why I love playing for Mambo Sauce because it allows me to be able to do both.
MMIM: Tell us about your experience playing with the classic band Northeast Groovers and how you are using that now with your role as the keyboardist with Mambo Sauce?
CW: Northest groovers was a band that I really grew up listening to. I really learned a lot about gogo, and music in general listening to Northeast Groovers, as well as Backyard, Junkyard and Rare Essence. When I was put in a position to play with Northeast Groovers, it was great. I loved it. I used a lot of what I learned playing in Northeast, and other bands that I have played with in Mambo Sauce, as well as in my production. I am a child of gogo and I am sure it comes through in my creativity in ways that I might not even notice.
MMIM: Are you willing to make beats for any artist or is there a criteria they must meet?
CW: Im pretty open to working with all artists. As long as they’re serious about their craft. In certain cases that may mean you have to spend a little money. I always stress to artists that they may have to sacrifice for their craft. As producers we have to buy expensive equipment to do what we do, and it can get frustrating that some artists expect us to work for free. But, for the most part if I see something in an artist and I feel like they’re serious I will work with anybody.
MMIM: How can our readers keep up with what Chris Wright is doing, as well as how they can get in contact with you?
CW: You can keep up with Chris Wright through My Space.
MMIM: Is there anything that you want the MMIM audience to know?
CW: Look out for grammy nominated 8trix Productions and also look out for Mambo Sauce the future of music.
MMIM had the pleasure of talking to The Foreign Exchange. Their story is quite unique as the group was formed through them meeting over the Internet. Talk about digital revolution…. Their music is refreshing, as well as unique and they recently released their sophomore album entitled Leave It All Behind. Be sure to check out the Daykeeper video after reading the interview just to see a sample of how talented this group is.
MMIM: So you guys met via OkayPlayer.com, how did the musical relationship begin? Did you guys just start exchanging songs back and forth? Can you explain?
Nicolay:It began from me and Phonte basically being in the same discussions on the Okay Player message boards when it came to musical topics. I eventually got enough courage to put some stuff online to see what people were thinking. He was one of the people that really liked what he heard. From that point on we would send stuff back and forth. I would send him a beat and he would take over from there with the production and the vocals.
MMIM: How long after you guys started making music did you meet in person?
Phonte: We probably did not meet face to face until two years after we started working together. I had a tour date overseas with Little Brother and that was the first time we actually met.
MMIM: What about each others music made you want to make music together?
Phonte:Nicolay was doing stuff that I was not really hearing. Most of the producers that I was working with were primarily sampling music. He was one of the first producers that was able to mix live instruments and sampling. His beats are intricate, and that’s what attracted me to his music.
Nicolay: Up to that point I had been making hip hop by myself and for myself. With Phonte reaching out to me and then being able to hear vocals laid over my tracks was a good experience. It’s also good to work with someone that has an incredible work ethic because you can learn from them.
MMIM:Loving the song and video for “Daykeeper.” Can you tell us what was the inspiration behind this track?
Phonte: We don’t really have a quote on quote meaning for the song. We don’t want to ruin the song and want people to grasp their own meaning for the song. There is a lot of symbolism in the video. Basically though you are looking at two people deal with issues within their relationship.
MMIM: By the way the album is simply beautiful. Can you tell our readers what it was like releasing the album in the US and overseas?
Nicolay: It was a big deal for us. For one reason, it has been four years since the first album came out, so it was something that had been a while in the making. I am proud of this project and to see people responding to it.
MMIM: You all seem to have a hold on the digital revolution. How important do you think it has been in your careers?
Phonte:I think the Internet has had an incredible role in our careers from both the creation of our music, marketing and keeping in contact with our fans. Really it’s a new day for independent artists. This is a time that we have all have prayed to have, but now that it’s here a lot of artist do not know how to navigate it. It’s like when slaves were free, it’s like okay we have our freedom, but now we don’t know what to do with ourselves. Now you don’t have to worry about the hassle with a label, but some people aren’t used to that because they are used to the old model working directly under a record company. I feel proud because we are at the forefront because we built this from the ground up. We pretty much did everything ourselves and have just been hustling. I feel like artists now should really embrace the internet.
MMIM: So what’s next for the Foreign Exchange and how can our readers reach out to you?
Nicolay: They can hit up the website The Foreign Exchange Music. They can also hit up MySpace. Right now we are looking at touring more cities and doing more shows. We want to thank everyone for the support and for purchasing the album.

Apparently, Ms. Luckett has been busy working in the lab to make her 2009 return. Rap-up.com has stated that LeToya is completing her second album which will feature guest appearances from Missy, Chris Brown and Ne-Yo. Her first single from the album will be entitled “Not Anymore.” The album will be called Lady Love and it is set to be released in March. We all remember LeToya’s first single Torn, but after the hype died we did not see to much of her. Let’s hope this time around Ms. Luckett can truly deliver.
