For those of you who are lucky enough to catch Oprah, don’t forget to tune in today! She will have special guest Jennifer Hudson on the show. Jennifer will be there to talk about everything, from her album, and how well it is doing on the charts, her upcoming wedding and her dealing with the loss of her family members. She will also perform her current single, “If This Isn’t Love.”

And it gets better…funny man Steve Harvey will also be a guest on the show today. I will definitely be “youtubing” this show later since I won’t have to opportunity to catch it. Happy Friday!

    VIBE Magazine Interviews Drake

    February 27, 2009

    drakevibeqjpg

MMIM weren’t the ones that recognized this talent. VIBE magazine had the opportunity to sit down and chat with rapper/singer Drake. They talked about everything from Degrassi, to his music career to Kanye and Wayne.

    DRAMA WITH DEGRASSI:
VIBE.com: You were on Degrassi for eight years. It must have taken a lot to leave that comfort zone. When did you know it was time to go?

Drake: I can’t really say I left that show. One day we came in and all the names were just changed on the dressing rooms. Everyone got cut. We go upstairs and it’s like, “Who are all these people auditioning in the front?” They owe us a lot of money. The amount of loyalty, the years we put in with these people…they did us foul. As far as the producers go, I don’t talk to anybody over there.
Were people skeptical about your talent when they saw that the kid from Degrassi was trying to be a rapper?

Before people had heard my music they were like, “So you’re really going to be a rapper? That’s really going to be your thing?” Especially around that time, that dope boy rap was really popping. People were wondering what the hell I was going to do. And it took me a while to find my sound.

    ACTOR TERNT RAPPER:
VIBE.com: There’s a shift in character from your first mixtape, Room for Improvement to your third, So Far Gone.

Drake:The first songs I made were all like “Replacement Girl” with Trey Songz. It was pretty straight forward, radio-friendly, not much content to it. And I thought that was the direction I’d go in. And then as life progressed, I grew and decided that to follow suit would truly be a waste of time.

I started to see my situation as more of an opportunity as opposed to a curse. Coming from Canada, coming from a TV show, it’s like “Wow. If I can really do something different, I may be regarded as the one of the first crossover film to music people to really be looked at as an artist.” Once I saw it like that, I started becoming more confident as a person. I started seeing my thoughts and feelings as something the world may want to hear, as opposed to some shit I just make up in my head. I think I did it a little bit on Room for Improvement. And Comeback Season was more of me proving that I had bars. Then So Far Gone was really my chance to open up and give people a true piece of myself because I had a lot going on in my life. Good things and bad.

VIBE.comStarting off unsure about pursuing a music career, what really solidified that this was the route to take?

Drake: I was friends with this kid that would put you on the spot all the time. I guess he read my rhyme books at my house and one day he just put me on blast at school. He told this kid I wanted to battle him and it became this big thing. So I went home and wrote all these rhymes for him—yeah, I cheated—came to school the next day and killed the guy.

    Lyrical Analysis: Lavish

    February 25, 2009

    twista-pharrell2

I recently heard the song “Lavish” by Twista featuring Pharrell Williams and decided to try and keep up with the lyrics, lol. This was one of my favorite collaborations Twista had done and always wondered what he was talking about. On one hand, I feel the song is about wanting to live the ‘good life’ compared to the current. On the other hand, I feel the song is about using the drug game to get the finer things in life with the possibility of getting out, but continue to love what can be obtained by it. Let MMIM know what you think they may be referring to after checking this verse of the lyrics.

    {Chorus}

You, you, you want the lavish crib and fancy cars
You want the face, on that Rolex shinin like the stars
Don’t worry mayne, you could get it mayne
(If you look in the sky and you don’t see your dream)
(Man don’t feel defeated, cause trust me you can build it)

    {verse}
Now hear the words that I flow when I spit
I know shorties that be havin dreams of goin legit
But the hustle quicker so they cop a fo’ on the split
Now they got enough money where they can go get a brick
It’s on – ain’t nuttin gon’ stop us now
Gotta look at 24′s while they watch us now
Spinners rollin up the block while they pump out noise
But they always get into it with the jump out boys
And why? Take a look at all the people that got dubs
You ain’t legitimate, you out here servin them rocks up
I know you want the radio and screens to pop up
But we gotta get the money and try not to get locked up
Know the difference between real and fake
Different work is just like different real estate
Open your mind, you got more than the skill to take
    Cause I know…

    Confession: White Tie Affair

    February 25, 2009

    twta2

I have heard this song “Allow Me to Introduce Myself…Mr. Right” by this Chicago-based band called The White Tie Affair and I must confess I love their sound for which I feel is a bit different from common pop rock bands. This song debuted along with their album entitled “Walk This Way” which was released in April 2008. The two founding members of this group, Chris Wallace and Sean P, sought a different sound and I feel they have achieved that very well. This song was first posted on their myspace page anonymously and grabbed the attention of several record labels, especially Epic Records/ Slightly Dangerous, which they were to signed to in 2007. In 2009, the band is scheduled to serve as the opening act for Lady GaGa, who will embark on her first solo North American tour “The Fame Ball Tour” in March.

The White Tie Affair’s first fan site, White Tie Affair Fans, opened in January, 2009.

Let MMIM know if you also confess to feeling The White Tie Affair.
