Very tragic news over the weekend – R&B legend Teena Marie passed at the young age of 54. Reports say that she was found by her daughter on Sunday morning. She apparently died in her sleep.
Teena Marie has hits that includes “Square Biz”, “Ooo La La La”, “Portuguese Love” and “Fire and Desire” with Rick James. Teena embodied more soul than most of the R&B singers today. In 1976, she was signed to Motown Records; the label didn’t release any of her music until she collaborated with Rick James in 1979. Her first album artwork, did not feature her face on the cover because they believe the R&B audience might not buy her album if they knew she was white.
Teena Marie has proved herself in the music business, whether being black or white, she has a large fanbase that truly loved her music and Teena as a person.
Let us know some of your favorite Teena Marie songs!
Here is a video of Teena performing with her mentor, Rick James at the BET awards.
Gone, but not forgotten. Nine years ago on this date we lost our R&B angel Aaliyah. Many new faces have graced the music scene since our angel spread her wings, yet none of them can compare to her. With a smooth voice and the ability to dance so gracefully Aaliyah won our hearts and her role in the movie Romeo Must Die, displayed that she also had acting abilities as well. Aaliyah’s career was just starting to take off, and many of us wonder what would she be doing now if she were still on this planet. I am sure she would be a dominant force since she certainly paved the way for many artists including Ciara. Tell MMIM what your favorite memory of Aaliyah is and enjoy the videos below.
R.I.P Baby Girl (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001)
Today marks a year since Michael Jackson passed and Billboard has put together a great tribute. Billboard chats with stars such as, Jason Derulo, Hanson, Janelle Monae, Lil’ Jon, Christina Aguilera and much more to remember the King. Enjoy and let us know your thoughts.
Yesterday we lost a man that contributed heavily to the Hip Hop movement, Rapper Guru put on his angel wings at the age of 43 after fighting cancer for over a year. Guru who was one half of rap group Gang Starr will defitnetly be missed. For those of you that are unfamiliar be sure to check out Jazzmatazz a series where Guru featured colloborations with inspirational Jazz icons where he was able to create synergy between hip hop and the jazz movement.
Our prayers go out to Guru’s family, friends, and fans.
Check out the video below for Lifesaver below, which can be found on Jazzmataz.
Yesterday, we lost another legend in music. Teddy Pendergrass passed due to complications from colon cancer surgery. He was only 59 years old.
We will always remember Teddy through his music with hits such as “Love T.K.O., Close the Door” and my favorite “When Somebody Loves You Back”. Our prayers go out to his family.
Check out this clip from the MJ Documentary, “This Is It”. In the clip, MJ rehearses for his song, Human Nature. The film will be in theatres on October 28.
I have a feeling this is going to be an AMAZING tribute. It might be hard to find a dry eye in that audience on Sunday. If you don’t watch anything else this weekend, make sure you catch this tribute to Michael Jackson this Sunday on MTV.
Gone but not forgotten on this day in 2001 we lost a beautiful and talented angel Aaliyah Dana Haughton. Aaliyah would have been 30 this year, and like so many other artists that have had a short journey on this planet while she was here she left her mark. It’s not how long you live, but how you live and the type of impact you leave behind once you are gone. What you do on this planet while you are here is up to you and Aaliyah conquered not only the music world, but she was also a budding actress with starring roles in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned.
One cannot help but to remember when the songstress stepped on the scene with her hit single Back and Forth, and then on her sophomore album she had all of the girls writing Four Page Letters to their crushes. People emulated her style mirroring the relaxed chic look with baggy pants, tight shirts, and fiercely swooped bangs in their hair. Yes Aaliyah was a trend setter in her own right, but can you blame people for adoring her? On her last studio album which graced us with hits that included We Need A Resolution and Rock the Boat, we became familiar with a much more mature Aaliyah that displayed to us that that she was much more than a skilled dancer.
MMIM would like to state that Aaliyah will always be a precious gem in our eyes and while she may not have a presence on her earth, she will continue to live on through her music, talent, and beauty. R.I.P to an Angel.
We also wanted to share some of our favorite Aaliyah tracks. Feel free to comment and let us know what your favorite memories of Ms. Haughton are.
MMIM would like to pay their respects to onee of the founding and current members of the legendary group Slum Village. The cause of death is still unknown but our thoughts and prayers go out to Baatin’s friends and family. MMIM was very fortunate to have the opportunity to interview the group last month. He will be missed…
The Michael Jackson Memorial tribute took place today and I must say it was extremely touching, yet sad at the same time. While thousands tweeted, updated Facebook statuses during the service you could not help but to realize what type of impact this man left on the planet. As the King of Pop’s golden casket was rolled in at first there was a quiet eeriness within the Staple Center, but once the performances started it almost became a celebration of this influential man’s life. With tearful performances from Usher and Mariah Carey, exhilarating speeches from Al Sharpton, as well as the famous Congresswoman millions watched in awe as these people paid their last respects to the greatest performer to EVER grace our planet. MMIM sends our prayers and condoloscences to the Jackson family, as well as his friends. And although we did not know Michael personally, when he MJ left this earth a lot of us felt like we lost a close relative. However, we must remember that everything in life happens for a reason. Jackson led a remarkable life bringing joy to the lives of others and now his beautiful spirit is gracing the heavens above. R.I.P Michael Jackson. We love you!

Rolling Stone Magazine has created their essential playlist of songs from Michael Jackson. The playlist includes hits, such as I Want You Back, Billie Jean, and Give it to Me.
Oh My!! I came across these videos from Michael Jackson and The Jackson’s medley of their past hits in Madison Square Garden from 2001. This footage is classic where they perform our favorites including, ABC, I Want You Back, Can You Feel It, and I’ll Be There. Enjoy people!
MMIM wanted to wish the late and great Tupac a happy birthday! Shakur would have been 38 years old today, and like so many other influential artists within the music game his unexpected death came way too soon. In spite of his death though, Tupac fans have yet to forget the man who was not just a talented rapper, but was also a remarkable poet and actor who had a way of using words to not only inspire people, but encourage them to find ways to bring about change. From conspiracy theories centered around Makaveli and anecdotal messages within his songs where Shakur would say things like “expect me like you expect Jesus to come back” this man knew just how to create a stir even after he was deceased. Tupac was not just a man but I feel that it’s safe to say he was a movement. His legacy will continue to live on for years and the impact that he has left on the rap game will never be forgetten. The rose that grew from concrete is now an angel and it’s no longer him against the world.
Some Words of Wisdom From Tupac Shakur
~”Why am I fighting to live, if I’m just living to fight Why am I trying to see, when there aint nothing in sight Why am I trying to give, when no one gives me a try Why am I dying to live, if I’m just living to die? Someone tell me why”
~ “For every dark night, there’s a brighter day”
~”Instead of of being so metaphorical with the rhyme, I was encouraged to go straight at it and hit it dead on and not waste time trying to cover things.”
