    Haiti Hold On

    February 2, 2010

    Haiti-flag

Check out this poem from Das aka Soul Talk. Inspiring and encouraging words dedicated to Haiti.

    Haiti Hold On…
As you have done throughout your past
Know that the pain and suffering you feel
    Now most certainly won’t last

    Haiti Hold On…
To the spirit of strength that is in your veins
Push forward to prosperity and take this beast
    Of destruction by its reigns

    Haiti Hold On…
Though it may seem that you are at the gates of
    Hell
And this destruction is the two headed Cerberus
But with might and courage you will conquer it like
    The hero Persius

My heart extends as a fellow human being and product
    Of Caribbean roots
And with the assistance of nations around the world you
Can have the future that is destined for you

    Haiti Hold On…
Because your children need their motherland
I know you lost immeasurably and many of you cry
    Uncontrollably

It seems fate has dealt and unfairly but don’t give up

    Lyrical Analysis: Estelle – 1980

    October 13, 2009

    estelle2

I was enjoying feeling the energy of the talented Estelle, when I came across her debut album “The 18th Day” with the interesting track “1980” which was a creative song about her life growing up in the 80’s. There were a couple of bars she said that caught my attention and stuck to me:

“I touched Africa and came back darker, knowing myself, feeling my roots a little bit harder…”

I definitely liked this song for it showed Estelle’s rawness and her display of hunger to be heard as an artist, even though she wasn’t receiving the credit she well deserves around this time. In my opinion, there is nothing like some good, conscious material in music along with creative delivery. I feel a lot of people can take this verse in several ways, share with us what you interpret from Estelle.

    Lyrical Analysis: Playing Possum

    July 20, 2009

Out of all the songs on BLACKsummer’snight, this one has intrigued me the most. From the melody, to the title, to the lyrics – it has grown to be my second favorite track (next to “Fist Full of Tears”). The melody is so beautiful and I love the instrumental at the end of this song. After listening to the lyrics over and over, its clear Maxwell is referring to a love interest that he wants back in his life. But how does the lyrics relate to the title of the song, “Playin’ Possum”??? Even if you are not able to break down the meaning, take a listen. This song is a beautiful masterpiece and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

    Playin’ Possum

“Come back from the dead. You left my, my heart here. Say what you will and won’t forget. Express disappointment, speak your regrets. Or baby call out my name, I’ll be where you are
I’ll be very still, step down to my heart. And mend this broken,If only you’d wake up from your constant possum playing. If only you’d wake up…
I’m begging you sugar, have some leniency. Call the president and ask him baby, to pardon me and bring you back to me. And mend this broken, If only you’d quit this nonsense of your possum playing. If only you’d wake up, would you wake up, would you wake up baby…”

    Lyrical Analysis: Janelle Monae

    May 12, 2009

    janelle_monae3

Ms. Janelle Monae is such a talent and I love her creativity through the voice of music she brings. I feel she is so underrated and should get more credit for her talent. MMIM has been a long time fan of hers along with many others. One of my favorite songs of hers would have to be “Sincerely, Jane.” Take the time to listen and check out her lyrics; you’ll find that Janelle has a very positive message to share. Let MMIM know what you think.

Left the city, my momma she said don’t come back home
These kids round’ killin each other, they lost they minds, they gone
They quittin’ school, making babies and can barely read
Some gone off to that war, lord have mercy on them
One, two, three, four, your cousins is round’ here sellin’ dope
While their daddy, your uncle is walking round’ strung out
Babies with babies, and their tears keep burning, while their dreams go down the drain now
(While their dreams go down the drain now)

Are we really living or just walking dead now?
    (Are we walking dead now)
Or dreaming of a hope riding the wings of angels
    The way we live
    The way we die
What a tragedy, I’m so terrified
Day dreamers please wake up, we can’t sleep no more

Love don’t make no sense, (ask) ask your neighbor
The winds have changed; it seems that they’ve abandoned us
The truth hurts, and so does yesterday
What good is love if it burns bright, and explodes in flames
(I thought every living thing had love but uhh)

Are we really living or just walking dead now?
    (Are we walking dead now)
Or dreaming of a hope riding the wings of angels
    The way we live
    The way we die
What a tragedy, I’m so terrified
Day dreamers please wake up, we can’t sleep no more

I’ve seen them shootin’ up funerals in they Sunday clothes (Yup)
And spending money on spinners but won’t pay college loans (Yup)
And all you gangers and bangers rollin’ dice and taking lives, in a smokey dark
Lord have mercy on you (Yup)
Teacher, teacher please reach those girls in them videos (Live your life)
The little girls just broken Queens, confusing bling for soul
Danger, there’s danger when you take off your clothes, all your dreams go down the drain girl

Are we really living or just walking dead now?
Or dreaming of a hope riding the wings of angels
    The way we live
    The way we die
What a tragedy, I’m so terrified
Day dreamers please wake up, we can’t sleep no more

We live and then we die, and we never know the right
So now, now we go, down underground
We think that we can fly but we never touch the sky
So now, now we go, down underground

    Five, seven, eight, two, one
It is now time, for you to come home my dear
    You’ve been gone long enough
    Thank you
You must come, you must go

    Lyrical Analysis: N.E.R.D.

    April 22, 2009

I am a big fan of N.E.R.D. and admire their creativity and style. I was listening to one of their songs “Run to the Sun” from their debut album “In Search of…” I’ve always wondered what Pharrell was referring to on this particular song. I’ve heard he’s talking about the loss of a loved one or even the death of hip hop. Let MMIM know what you think Pharrell may be referring to in this song after checking out his lyrics below.

Run To The Sun – N.E.R.D.

Thinking about the time we share
    And how I wasn’t there
    It hurt me
    These people overwork me
Then I heard maybe soon you’ll leave
Excuse me lord if you have tricks up your sleeve
I’m not ready to be bereaved
I know I’m always asking for something
    Or another
But this time, it’s just time
    ‘Cause I love her
But baby if he don’t change his mind
    Or fate or time
Yo I want to leave you with this line

    Lyrical Analysis – Lily Allen – 22

    March 25, 2009

    lily-allen2

I was listening to Ms. Lily Allen’s new album and have grown to like her song “22,” but I wonder who she may be referring to on this song. I hear some say she’s talking about herself; others have said she’s singing about her mother or just someone else. After checking out the lyrics, share your thoughts with MMIM.

    22 – Lily Allen

When she was 22 the future looked bright
But she’s nearly 30 now and she’s out every night
I see that look in her face she’s got that look in her eye
She’s thinking how did I get here and wondering why

It’s sad but it’s true how society says
    Her life is already over
There’s nothing to do and there’s nothing to say
Til the man of her dreams comes along picks her up and puts her over his shoulder
It seems so unlikely in this day and age

She’s got an alright job but it’s not a career
Wherever she thinks about it, it brings her to tears
Cause all she wants is a boyfriend
    She gets one-night stands
She’s thinking how did I get here
I’m doing all that I can

It’s sad but it’s true how society says
    Her life is already over
There’s nothing to do and there’s nothing to say
Til the man of her dreams comes along picks her up and puts her over his shoulder
It seems so unlikely in this day and age

It’s sad but it’s true how society says
    Her life is already over
There’s nothing to do and there’s nothing to say
Til the man of her dreams comes along picks her up and puts her over his shoulder
It seems so unlikely in this day and age

    Lyrical Analysis: Gibberish

    March 19, 2009

    rles

“Gibberish” is one of my favorite songs from Ryan Leslie’s current album, but its almost one of the most confusing songs that I have ever heard. I even tried to google a few lyrics, and not everyone has a complete understanding of this song. I believe he is singing about a woman, but what about her? Is he describing her looks or how she makes him feel? This is definitely a great title for this song because it sounds just like Gibberish but I have to applaud Ryan for his creativeness. Take a listen below and let us know what you think…

    Lyrical Analysis: Lavish

    February 25, 2009

    twista-pharrell2

I recently heard the song “Lavish” by Twista featuring Pharrell Williams and decided to try and keep up with the lyrics, lol. This was one of my favorite collaborations Twista had done and always wondered what he was talking about. On one hand, I feel the song is about wanting to live the ‘good life’ compared to the current. On the other hand, I feel the song is about using the drug game to get the finer things in life with the possibility of getting out, but continue to love what can be obtained by it. Let MMIM know what you think they may be referring to after checking this verse of the lyrics.

    {Chorus}

You, you, you want the lavish crib and fancy cars
You want the face, on that Rolex shinin like the stars
Don’t worry mayne, you could get it mayne
(If you look in the sky and you don’t see your dream)
(Man don’t feel defeated, cause trust me you can build it)

    {verse}
Now hear the words that I flow when I spit
I know shorties that be havin dreams of goin legit
But the hustle quicker so they cop a fo’ on the split
Now they got enough money where they can go get a brick
It’s on – ain’t nuttin gon’ stop us now
Gotta look at 24′s while they watch us now
Spinners rollin up the block while they pump out noise
But they always get into it with the jump out boys
And why? Take a look at all the people that got dubs
You ain’t legitimate, you out here servin them rocks up
I know you want the radio and screens to pop up
But we gotta get the money and try not to get locked up
Know the difference between real and fake
Different work is just like different real estate
Open your mind, you got more than the skill to take
    Cause I know…

    Lyrical Analysis: Stay With Me

    February 12, 2009

    pharrell2

I recently had a small discussion about the works of Mr. Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes with special regard to this song “Stay With Me” which was released with his debut album “In My Mind.” This was one of my favorite songs on the album so I was asked to describe what I liked about the song. Of course I mentioned the production as I love the Neptunes’ style. The vocal arrangement, which I feel complements the track, but never did I mention the lyrics. We all know that sometimes Pharrell can take you on a lyrical escapade, but I wanted to try and analyze what he was really saying in this piece, especially in the second verse which I have for you below.

    “Don’t take the time
    To relax your mind
    So unusual (ooh baby)
    But your priorities are disheveled
But your emotions and your health just don’t go
    Your body says no, So-
    I can’t conceive
That leaves will grow on trees in loweth degrees
    and comeback next spring
    But the perplexities of life
Brings more days that bore new skies
So whose to know, possible (that you could)”

Let MMIM know what you think Pharrell is talking about.

Lyrical Analysis “Let’s Just Do It”

    January 29, 2009

    lisalopes2

This week I wanted to attempt to analyze Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes with her single “Let’s Just Do It” featuring TLC and Missy Elliott. This song is included in Left Eye’s new album ‘Eye Legacy’ which was released yesterday, January 27th. Lisa was definitely a hot lyricist in my book and so far I love the new album. The lyrics in this particular song were quite interesting as I felt she could have been referring to several entities in this verse which I have provided below for our readers to analyze as well.

    Let’s Do It

    “Nobody never understood be better
    A true friend forever
That’s why I’m writing you this love letter
Despite my ways through every phase
    You brought me better days
    Withstood the craze
From the beginning Windy hill the black Lennon
When I was saggin denim, and let you get up in em’
Until I damage when I select it
Another nigga but we managed to stay connected
When you expected to see me naked
I couldn’t let it five years and your still respected
Now check it, give me a second to unwind
You’ll find all the pain and misery that nearly blew my mind
Cant no fame and shivery compare to losing time
I’ll explain my history aboard the cools at nine
Don’t be late, cuz I would hate to cross the seven seas
In the windy breeze, without your fantasies
    Lets Do It”

    Lyrical Analysis: Sun, Moon, Stars

    mos-def1

This week’s lyrical Analysis is brought to you by the talented Mos Def with the song entitled “Sun, Moon, Stars” which can be found on his “True Magic” album. In my opinion, Mos Def is truly deep and is, by far, an underrated artist. In a nutshell, I feel this song has absolutely nothing to do with the title, and after enjoying in a deep discussion with my peers on this particular track, I felt the need to reach out to you, our readers, to seek your knowledge of what Mos Def may be referring to. Check out his lyrics below:

    [audio http://mymoodismusic.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/10-sun-moon-stars.mp3]

“A night where beautiful life is real
    The mathematic to acting still
    The unfamiliar the warm embrace
The family ties and the stranger’s face
The lighting thunder the power steed
The what it is and the what is believed
The strong connections desire to need
The waking now or the moment to dream
The laugh the murmur the moan and the scream
The voice of reason somewhere in between
The one and all the me and the we
The I and I the thou and the thee
A man a design a child of the streets
The daily chore the impossible feat
The drum the chorus phenomenal beat
Easy to touch and the harder to reach
The sweetest fruit in the top of the tree
The sun the moon the stars and the bree-eze

I’m coming to it, and it’s coming to me
    I’m getting ready”

    Lyrical Analysis "Plastic People"

    December 28, 2008

    shontelle3

This week’s Lyrical Analysis is brought to you by Shontelle with her single entitled “Plastic People” which is the next single to be released from her debut album “Shontelligence.” Shontelle is a Bajan singer-songwriter as well as a rapper and has been around (behind the scenes) for a while, working with popular Caribbean artistry such as Alison Hinds and American crossover Rihanna, but Shontelle has now stepped into the mainstream and was recently signed to Street Records Corp/ Universal Motown Records and her single to further show her talents. In her lyrics in this song, I feel she is referring to those she has dealt with in the industry who have slighted her in any form or fashion. These lyrics can also apply to everyday people we, in general, have dealt with or dealing with in the present. Let MMIM know your thoughts.

    [audio http://mymoodismusic.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/08-plastic-people.mp3]
    “Plastic People”

    [Verse 1]
Carry me home away from all these things
    That keep deceiving me
I’m all alone nowhere no one
To show me where to go
Take my money wear my shirt
Using me to do your dirt
Judging me when all the time
You’re the one that did the crime
Someone tell me what’s the truth
Save the children, save the youth
What about our hopes and dreams
You’re not what you really seem oh

    [Chorus]
    Nation of the plastic people
Here’s the church and here’s its people
    Preaching good and doing evil
Trying to treat you less than equal
    Saying this and meaning that
    Twisting up into your back
Don’t be cast into the sequel
Living in a nation of plastic people (plastic people)

    [Verse 2]
You’re just like a rose I wanna grow
So I can serve my purpose here
I wanna fly before I die
Be like a bird and touch the sky
Take my home, and take my name
    Generation cellophane
There’s no difference all the same
    I don’t know when I’m ashamed
Can you walk inside my shoes?
Don’t be mad if I refuse
    Artificial attributes,
    Different leaders same old news

    [Chorus]

    What do you know,
It’s a situation begging for salvation
Looking to the sky to answer to all my frustration
    There’s a choice I’m making
    And there’s a chance I’ll take it
It’s the only life I got to live so I can’t fake it

    Generation.
    Desperaton.
    Demonstration.
    Provocation.
    Population.
    Segregation.
    Isolation.
    Suffocation.
    Degradation.
    Desolation.
    Living in a plastic nation.

    Lyrical Analysis “This Bird”

    December 21, 2008

    solange3

Miss Solange Knowles has come a long way with her musical talents and style. So with that being said, her lyrics in her song titled “This Bird” were analyzed. Her album does a good job of capturing that classic soul sound; and this particular song consists of Solange singing over the track “Slow This Bird Down” originally done by “Boards of Canada,” which happens to be an album full of some good sounds as well. To keep my analytical attempt general, I feel Solange may be referring to her coming up as a young lady, witnessing the many influences in life that can either make you or break you. Making the right life choices; how she may not be a saint, but in the same token, she’s not out doing wrong, so not matter what she’s going to live and reach her reaches her goals.

    [audio http://mymoodismusic.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/this-bird1.mp3]

    “Once in a time
Where the girls feel like girls
    And the world is painted
    Cotton candy
    Where the sweet lemonade
    Of mcgregor street
Was the best the damn thing of the summer breeze
Your dad drives a foreign car
And your mama looks like a beauty queen
    Now the sour bitter days
    Of a colorless place
Seems to light up my nights somehow
And the music I play must be loud, loud, loud, loud, loud as can be
So I don’t have to hear myself think
So I don’t have to wake up from this dream
I don’t wanna sing no single mama blues
I’m not singin look at me I’ve been abused
O I’m honestly lost girl starin at you
So maybe ill put on my high heel shoes
    And soar the night away
    And soar the night away
    But whatever I do

I’m not gonna slow this bird down
I don’t wanna look life in the eye
I’m not gonna fall face first in the spiral called a life
    I’m not in denial
    I’m not suicidal
    Not an alcoholic
    I’m not out here whoring
So just shut the f**k up
    This birds not slowing down
    Once in a while
When the sun does its job
Lets the clouds take a nice day off
I can breeze through the day”

Let MMIM know your thoughts of what Solange may be referring to in this song.

    Lyrical Analysis "Blind Mary"

    December 14, 2008

    gnarls-barkley2

Gnarls Barkley is a grammy award winning musical collaboration between hit producer Danger Mouse from New York, and rapper/ vocalist Cee-Lo Green from Atlanta. This week let’s analyze the lyrics of Gnarls Barkley with their single “Blind Mary” which is off of their sophomore album “The Odd Couple.” I am a fan of their music and love this particular song. I feel Cee-Lo could be referring to weed. I mean how clever would it be to name a song about weed “Blind Mary?” Think about it, Gnarls Barkley’s music is a bit psychosocial…once you get it, the songs magically make sense. We as modern day people are more concerned with how we appear rather than who we are…so without eyes, Mary cannot judge that. But all in all, we know they could be talking about something completely different. MMIM invites you to give your synopses on these lyrics.

    [audio http://mymoodismusic.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/11-blind-mary.mp3]

I love, Mary! (I love Mary)
Blind Mary, marry me (marry me)
I love, Mary! (la lah lah)

She has never seen the sunshine (sunshine)
Yet she’s getting along just fine (fine)
She’s not staying, she’s just passing through (through-ooh-ooeooh-ooh)
Hey, do you mind if I follow you?

I love, Mary! (I love Mary)
Blind Mary, marry me (marry me)
I love, Mary! (la la lah)

I heard a voice say catch me if you can
Before you know it I was holding her hand
It’s harder to imagine than understand
How she knows exactly who I am

She’s my friend, she doesn’t judge me
She has no idea I’m ugly
So I’ve absolutely nothing to hide
Because I’m so much prettier inside

    Lyrical Analysis “Heartless”

    December 3, 2008

We all love Kanye West for his hot production style and deep lyrics. Today I’ve made an attempt to analyze a verse from Kanye West’s song “Heartless” which is included in his new album 808’s and Heartbreak. I feel he is speaking metaphorically of something other than what could be obvious. MMIM asks that you share what you feel Kanye may be referring to.
