By far one of the most humble people you will ever meet, Morgan is a 23 year old female hip hop artist from Washington, DC. A self-proclaimed “lyrical poet,” Morgan looks towards the infamous greats for inspiration, but does not rely on their sound to create her own. “I have artists that I look up to because I would like to be better than them one day. That’s what you’re supposed to do when you idolize someone, and they shouldn’t be offended, they should be flattered. I know I’ll be flattered in due time.”

With a pen and pad in one hand, and a microphone in the other, Morgan has undoubtedly prepared herself for the next step in her journey. With the DMV’s own Judah on the beat, and cosigns from illroots, DJ Benzi, and illvibes-dmv.com, how can you go wrong? Enter Baltimore artist Greenspan, whose next project, When the Sky Turns Green, is due out August 11, is gaining major endorsements. Greenspan recently joined DMV native Wale on the Baltimore leg of his ultra popular Attention Deficit Tour. His freshman project entitled Got Green? received rave reviews from the Baltimore City Paper who loved his live show, calling him “an underrated local rapper with one of the tightest live shows in the city.” Allhiphop.com featured Greenspan’s single “Who Got the Jazz” and users gave it 4 out of 5 stars, great for his freshmen effort. With creative lyricism and hard hitting beats, Greenspan is positioned to take over the hip hop game in the DMV and beyond.

When Brooklyn produces an artist of any discipline, the proud lineage of the borough itself speaks long before the lone performer, be they painter, writer, or rapper. On The Come Up: Q Da Kid

In the summer of 2006, Q signed with So So Def/Virgin and appeared on a number of songs with A-list artists including, Fabolous’ “Make Me Better,” featuring Ne-Yo, “No One” by Alicia Keys, “Fine” by Mary J. Blige, and “Can’t Help But Wait” by Trey Songz. When Jermaine Dupri was named an executive at Island in early 2007, Q wasn’t sure how he would fit into JD’s new situation. “While he was getting established in the [Def Jam] building he kept telling me, ‘Be patient, I got you,’” says Q. “He told me that for a good year and a half straight. Then he called me one day and was like, ‘I might have a situation that would be good for you.’ We sat down and that’s when he told me about the Tag deal. He said it would be a good look for me and that I deserved it because I grind hard for what I want and that’s what the whole brand is about.”

Dubbing himself “The new breed of hip-hop,” Q is now ready to take over. With production on his debut album so far from No I.D. and Jermaine Dupri, Q promises his first LP will be a proper introduction to exactly who he is and what he stands for. “When I really put it together, I could be in the category of Rakim, Nas and Jay-Z,” he says. “Most rappers just be in the streets talking about selling drugs and stuff like that. I’m more into telling my story. Big was someone who was into telling his story, ‘Pac was a person who told his story, Jay is a person who tells his story.”

Thanks to the help of Jermaine Dupri, Q will not only get to rap about the world as he sees it, but he will also get to rap over the contagious club bangers executive producer JD is known and loved for. “JD told me, ‘Don’t stop grinding and being the person that you are,’” says Q. “’Just like you were determined to meet me and it took a minute to get it going and you was always in the studio, don’t stop now that you’ve got a deal. Just act like you ain’t got it. Stay hungry and be consistent.’ I told him, ‘Dawg, I’m gonna make you proud.’”

MMIM: So who is Whitney Ray?!
WR: She’s strong, shy at times, a little sassy and independent.I always try to put my self in my music so when your listening your really getting to know me.

MMIM:You have a beautiful voice. Can you tell our readers how long you have been singing and who you admire in the music game?
WR: I’ve been singing since i was four. It’s been a long journey but music is something i always knew i wanted to do.Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Keysha Cole, Beyonce all have influence on my music.There some of the artist i really enjoy listening to. I am also a Major fan of Jay Z. His music always give me a new direction when trying to find new melodys.I’m def a major fan.

MMIM:What projects are you currently working on? Do you plan on doing any shows soon?
WR: Right now im in the studio reparing to release a single. I’m also working on a compliation album with a great rapper by the name of Nazar under B U Entertainment.

MMIM: In addition to a singer, you are also a writer. Can you tell us what influences the words in your songs?
WR: Life inspires my music! My words come from every day situations that i not only go thru but that a lot of women and men go through as well.

MMIM: What producers and or artists would you like to work with?
WR: I would lovvvvveeeee to work with several artist. Like Mariah Carey, definately keysha cole, of course Jay Z, and also Kim Burell even though she does gospel music i would love to work with her because she has so much control over her voice its amazing to hear sometimes what she can do. As far as producers Kanye west is definately my top choice. I believe his creativity is out of this world and as i listen to the different artist he has worked with i can tell he really knows how to personalize a track.

MMIM: Where would you like to see the rest of 2009 take you?
WR: In 2009 i want to see my career reach it’s full potential. i hope to continue to inspire people with my music and catch the attention of people that have not met Whitney Ray yet. Im going to continue to go hard….the sky’s the limit.

Rapsody, known also by the stage name Rapdiddy, is the new female force in hip hop, and she’s about to blaze the trail for the new generation of women who rely on their skills to make marks in the music world. She is Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder’s first artist on his label, Its A Wonderful World Music Group, and she sets
the bar high for all following labelmates, male or female.

Currently, she is working on a her first solo album, The Return of the B-girl. Rapsody has made appearances on 9th Wonder’s The Wonder Years, The Kooley High EP Summer Sessions, and more recently on Nike
documentary celebrating 30 years of basketball, Nike Laced. “I want to make good music and be a role model to little girls, especially little black girls,” she confirms.

On The Come Up: Formula412

Six people, six pieces, 1 incredible sound. Formula Four One Two is an upcoming band that has amazing chemistry and makes dope music. Located in Pittsburgh, Formula412 has a unique tactful approach to the music industry. Instead of creating an album then touring to support it, they did the opposite. They created each song and crowd tested them. After touring, Formula412 went back to where it all began and recorded in their hometown studio, creating their debut full-length album—The Difference. They then hit the streets of Pittsburgh and created their first music video to their single “Out on Front Street”, which can be found on youtube.com/formula412. Their skill and talent go without saying; with over 100,000 views of their video, days after its release their boundless success is evident. They just recently performed with Busta Rhymes and N.E.R.D. this past month and is performing alongside N.E.R.D. again April 4th, 2009. On The Come Up: Brandun DeShay

MMIM: In your bio, you stated that you “realized [you] had terrible flow but great lyrics so [you] “retired” to rethink [your] style” What type of style do you have now? What works best for you now?

Brandun DeShay: I took a step back so I could really find myself. I feel my style is more honest now, before I took a lot of other artists styles into consideration. It’s more personal now. I have developed my own style and techniques.

MMIM: I read that your unofficial mentor is Charles Hamilton, that’s amazing! How has that affected your career and your personal life? What is the most important thing he’s taught you?

Brandun DeShay: He has sent me in the right direction marketing and promotions wise. He told me to hit up blogs, etc. And he taught me to be real with myself and the fans and to never forget to be honest. Personally he has changed me the most by inspiring me to be real, not only has my brand as an artist improved, the brand of me has improved also thanks to him.

MMIM: I’m sure you heard Nas’ comment about how hip hop is dead. What do you think about the state of hip hop in your perspective? Is hip hop changing for the better or worse?

Brandun DeShay: Like any other genre, I feel like its [hip hop] expanding it started basic and from the streets and now it is branching out. In my opinion, hip hop never died its just growing. When Nas made that statement I understood it to be him analyzing hip hop in a cultural aspect, and therefore I can’t really speak on that.

MMIM: What if any causes/issues would u like to spread awareness about as you expand as an artist?

Brandun DeShay: I am a philanthropist; I donate where it’s needed. I just carry myself as a responsible gentleman therefore, leading by example. There is so much out there that needs awareness, therefore I am focusing on the brand of a good person, and promoting knowing yourself, and being the best person you can be, regardless of ethnicity, socio-economic status, etc.

MMIM: How has self producing affected your brand and your craft?

Brandun DeShay: It helps towards being more independent. I have the knowledge to use the tools, and I can be self sustaining, because I know the business. Anywhere I go I can record, if I have the tools because of the lessons I have learned.

On The Come Up: Young Swagger

In the middle of a shopping center in College Park, MD, Paul “Young Swagger” Baker spits more bars than “a million pair of Adidas” -the same amount Canibus proclaimed to have spit in 1998. The Washington, D.C. native raps and uses his body language long enough to spark excitement, smirks and serious head-nods from a crowd of hip-hop lovers and The Famous Firm C.E.O. and past director of A&R at Atlantic Records, Sickamore.

After the job is done, Sickamore smiles and says with confirmation, “I never heard somebody go that hard.” After years and years of practice, a craft that seems so simple to display, has only come easy after hard work and dedication. Short days and long nights were dedicated to his love for music and semblance of Tupac Shakur, Shawn Carter and Christopher Wallace would become staples of what to look for in an emcee. After studying their sound, deliveries and rhyme schemes, Young Swagger created the perfect formula for becoming the world’s greatest emcee. He would use drugs called, “conviction” and “truth,” to grab the attention of hip- hop addicts and create a base that would boil into hardcore, honest music. His product would speak for itself. It would sell and create a buzz.

MMIM: How did you feel leaving school to pursue music?

YS: I felt like the the pressure was on but I was ready for my destiny. Rap is the first basket I put all my eggs into. I think I would rather have this pressure then being in an office being pressured to do something I didn’t love to do.

MMIM: Tell us why you chose the name ‘Young Swagger?”

YS: That’s just what the streets deemed me when I was coming up on the battle circuit…I would put my on money up to battle folks and after a few people got bodied then folks began to get scared…The confidence in my talents brought about the name swagger.

MMIM: Who are your musical influences?

YS: Pac…..I love the passion in his music, T.I….is the one of the all around best in the game, Jay-Z….as a rapper we should all to aspire to have the career he had from top to bottom. He is the pinnacle of Hip-Hop, Biggie…even though he was cut short he was undeniable in his greatness

MMIM: What projects are you working on, can you give us any details?

YS: Debut mixtape…and just in the lab working with the best producers trying to make the best music I can for the moment. Also I’m doing features on some other up and coming artists projects.

MMIM: What obstacles have you faced trying to pursue your passion, which is music?

YS: Well my team and I finance all the things we do so it can become strenuous especially when you do this 24/7….As any other street individual I’ve lost soldiers in the streets but it serves as motivation to keep pushing….also just trying to break in this industry is tough but I have a good team and we will grind till we cant grind anymore.

MMIM: How can your fans reach out to you or know more about Young Swagger?
