Before Kanye said no to anymore interviews, Noah Callahan-Bever of Complex magazine did a very personal interview with the star while he lived in Hawaii. He lived with Kanye, including spending time with him in the studio while creating his current album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The interview gives insight on the type of artist Kanye is and how hard he works. There are also quotes from the artist that were featured on the album and how working with Kanye was for them.

Here is a portion of the interview below:
“Kanye West was over it, he said. Done with music. He’d clearly needed a break, and his subconscious had manufactured one. Now, he was all about fashion—red leather, gold details, and recapturing the decadence of late-’90s hip-hop in design. While I encouraged his pursuit since he was so obviously enthused, I confessed that it’d be a bummer if he abandoned music altogether. In response, he shared rhymes from a still-never-released song he’d done with Jay-Z and Jack White and talked at length about trying to master the physicality of rap. He also admitted that he had beats in his head—ones that sounded like 808s melodies over Mobb Deep drums, no less—that he had to get out. But he was over it. Riiiiiiiight.

Kid Cudi graces the cover of the lastest Complex Magazine where he discusses how he does not like being compared to other rappers, what you can expect to hear on his upcoming album, and his past issues with drugs.
Cudi on why he stated in “Mojo So Dope,” that he “live through words, not metaphors:
I didn’t want anybody to take it the wrong way, because it wasn’t a dis.But most of the rappers that everyone loves are rappers that use metaphors. That’s not my style of rap. I like to rhyme in a more poetic way. Sometimes you don’t have to use these…witty ways of trying. It just sounds like somebody is overselling shit.

Better late than never, but if you have not already seen Trey Songz’s Complex Magazine spread you are in for a treat. Check out the pics below in addition to the behind the scenes video. He looks mighty scrumptious as always.
The title of the shoot Songz in the Key of Life is quite creative, and I am loving the black and white photography.

Complex recently did a great feature on their site entitled Life After Death: Dead Rap Magazines. I found it quite interesting because they remind us of how the music journalism industry has evolved and moved drastically onto the interactive space, while print is slowly but surely becoming obsolete.
Within the feature they describe each magazine’s pitch, what they are notable for, their death knell, legacy, and how they felt the magazine should be rated. Some of the popular titles include Subculture, Notorious, Urban Soul, and most recently Vibe.
