Some great news here – not only am I excited about this joint venture but Annie happens to be one of my favorite movies! I was too young to see the play but I have the movie version that I still watch to this day. Can’t wait to see the end result with Willow Smith starring. Let us know what you think.
“Overbrook Entertainment partners James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have formed a joint venture with Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter to develop and produce major motion pictures. One of the projects being discussed is the re-imagination of the classic Broadway musical ANNIE as a vehicle for Willow Smith to star. The film will be developed with Sony Pictures Entertainment and produced by Overbrook Entertainment and Mr. Carter.
The partnership began over dinner with Jada, Will, James Lassiter and JAY-Z, where they decided to co-invest in the now successful beauty products line Carol’s Daughter. They continued this partnership as co-producers of the successful Broadway production Fela!, which earned a total of eleven Tony Award nominations in 2010.
Additionally, Willow Smith, managed by OE Executive Miguel Melendez, signed onto JAY-Z’s record label, Roc Nation which produced her first single titled “Whip My Hair,” which has been certified Platinum. JAY-Z previously sampled the classic Annie song “It’s the Hard Knock Life” in his chart-busting single “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem).”
“The time is right to bring back ANNIE to the big screen. Of course, we’re true believers in Willow’s talent and believe she will be perfect in this role,” said Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad. “Combining Willow with the Overbrook team that reimagined Karate Kid and the spectacular JAY-Z makes this a dream project. A decade ago, JAY-Z proved that the power of the underlying Broadway property remains, by showing how these songs could be reinterpreted for a new generation with Hard-Knock Life. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with our friends at Overbrook as they launch this new venture.”
OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) premiered this weekend. For one of the first series, OWN featured Jay-Z in “Oprah Presents Master Class.” I really enjoyed this interview/feature, check it out and let u sknow if you feel the same.
Lots of celebrity parties this past weekend for NYE. One all star studded party included, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rihanna and more. While Kanye sang the hook for his hit “Runaway” he announced some great news that we have been waiting on, “Watch the Throne coming in one week” – this is the collaborative project Hov and Yeezy have been working on. Also, watch the video to see Rihanna do a performance of her single, “What’s My Name.”
The dark and twisted video for Kanye West’s “Monster” featuring Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross. Lots of dead bodies and blood is included in the Jake Nava directed visual.
New music to grace your ears before the new year from Eminem, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, and Jay-Z.
Very good interview with Jay-Z done by PBS’ Charlie Rose. In the hour long interview, Jay-Z talks about his book Decoded, growing up without having his dad in his life and selling drugs, his altercation with Lance “Un” Rivera, his admiration for Kanye and Chris Martin amongst other things. His mom and nephew was also in the audience supporting him.
Check out the sneak preview for Kanye West’s music video, Monster. The clip shows Rick Ross, Kanye, Hov and Nicki in a spooky and gruesome house surrounded with dead bodies. I can’t wait to see the video in its entirety; looks like its going to be a dope visual.
Jay-Z’s first book, Decoded has been highly successful since its release even gaining a spot on the New York Times Bestseller list. The book is currently holding down the #3 spot, right behind former President George Bush memoir, Decision POints and and Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken.
Congrats to Hov as this is a major accomplishment even Oprah included it in her “favorite things” episode.
Earlier this week Jay-Z sat down with Cornel West to discuss his recently released book Decoded at the New York Public Library. For those of you that did not get a chance to check out this in depth interview, you can check it out below. Kudos to FORA.tv for the live stream.
Jay-Z is doing heavy promotion for his debut book, Decoded. He appeared on David Letterman last night to talk more about the book and what inspired him to write it. Great interview.
