Kid Sister is gaining a lot of attention with her single “Pro Nails” featuring Kanye West. And with the rap game lacking female rappers, Kid Sister could not have come at a better time.
Kid Sister started singing at a young age, and then moved on to musical theatre. It was not until 2005 that she broke into the rap game and started performing. Born Melissa Young, Kid Sister was raised in Illinois where she became a MC at parties hosted by her brother Josh Young known as J2K of the Chicago DJ duo Flosstradamus.
With her brother as her DJ and producer, Kid Sister debuted her single “Pro Nails” which was so popular as a digital download that Kanye West featured it on his 2007 mixtape “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” The collabo happened when Kid Sister’s boyfriend, who is Kanye’s DJ, played the song for Kanye, and he immediately decided that he wanted to be apart of the track.
Eye Weekly asked Kid Sister what makes her different from other female rappers. “I don’t write about fucking and all the stuff that most girl rappers get pigeonholed in, and that’s fine because I wanted to be different. I think that naturally I’m a little bit nerdy; I was always the funny, quirky, chubby girl in school and I think that that comes out. I rhyme about food, dancing, boys, shopping, going to the currency exchange and trying to cash my $42 cheque from the focus group that I did last night — normal, poor girl-just-starting-out shit.”
With her energetic flow and her 80′s style, Kid Sister is definitely a fresh face to watch out for.
Kid Sister was recently signed to Downtown Records and is preparing for her debut album entitled “KoKo B. Ware” (named after famous 80′s WWE wrestler) later on this year.
Kid Sister was featured last month on TRL for their Spankin’ New Ladies Week.
