When in the world did people begin to have trailers for their albums? I think it began with the music video teaser/preview. I thought, what a waste of time. But this one Mos Def has put together for his album “Ecstatic” is pretty dope. Check it out below, you will see what I mean…
This week’s lyrical Analysis is brought to you by the talented Mos Def with the song entitled “Sun, Moon, Stars” which can be found on his “True Magic” album. In my opinion, Mos Def is truly deep and is, by far, an underrated artist. In a nutshell, I feel this song has absolutely nothing to do with the title, and after enjoying in a deep discussion with my peers on this particular track, I felt the need to reach out to you, our readers, to seek your knowledge of what Mos Def may be referring to. Check out his lyrics below:
“A night where beautiful life is real
The mathematic to acting still
The unfamiliar the warm embrace
The family ties and the stranger’s face
The lighting thunder the power steed
The what it is and the what is believed
The strong connections desire to need
The waking now or the moment to dream
The laugh the murmur the moan and the scream
The voice of reason somewhere in between
The one and all the me and the we
The I and I the thou and the thee
A man a design a child of the streets
The daily chore the impossible feat
The drum the chorus phenomenal beat
Easy to touch and the harder to reach
The sweetest fruit in the top of the tree
The sun the moon the stars and the bree-eze
I’m coming to it, and it’s coming to me
I’m getting ready”
I was listening to one of my favorite hip hop albums, BlackStar, with Talib Kweli and Mos Def, and a song called “Thieves in the Night” started to play. It grasped my attention due to Mos Def’s rebuttal he delivered after his heavy-hitting verse:
A lot of people don’t understand the true criteria of things
Can’t just accept the appearance
Have to get the true essence
I love this lyric because it compliments how I feel in regards to how we should be. We all think we know what’s going on just by looking at the surface instead of getting the facts to help shape your perception. Let MMIM know what you feel Mos Def was referring to in his lyric.
Mos Def is ready to grace us with another album. StreetCred has stated that Mos Def’s anticipated album The Ecstatic will be released in December. His current single from the album entitled Life in Marvelous Times will be available for download on iTunes on election day, also known as November 4th. How appropriate don’t you think? From hearing the first single I am excited about Mos Def’s upcoming project. This man is talented on screen and on the mic, so I am sure he will deliver a powerful message within his lyrics on this album. Let MMIM know what you think.
