Album Retrospect: Vivian Green – Beautiful

    April 7, 2010

    vivian green beautiful album cover

Its been five years since we have heard anything from the talented Vivian Green. We can’t help but remember reciting the lyrics from Emotional Rollercoaster and Gotta Go Gotta Leave and being able to relate to every word she was saying in those songs. These were the cries from a woman who had been going through it from a relationship that had provided more pain than pleasure.

On Green’s new album Beautiful, while she still discusses love and relationships, she approaches it from a different standpoint. No longer is she wasting time or energy dwelling on a relationship that didn’t work out, but rather she is looking at it as a learning experience and pressing forward with life. Her outlook is much more pleasant this time around and this is evident on tracks including Too Intense where she describes how she fell for someone instantly, in addition to her current single Beautiful where she provides advice on how to treat a female. On Caught Up, an instant MMIM fave Green is joined with her girls where they make light of foolish situations involving men where she states “never what you thought it was when you were so caught up.”

For those of you that adore true R&B, you will truly appreciate Vivian Green’s third album, Beautiful. Her voice is remarkable and within her songs she provides stories that we all can relate to surrounding relationships and love. Beautiful was released on April 6th, so make sure you show your support.

    Center Stage: Vivian Green

My Mood is Music had the pleasure of chatting with R&B songstress Vivian Green. Check out our conversation below where she discusses her upcoming album, Beautiful, the joys of motherhood, and much more.

MMIM: It’s been five years since you put out a studio album. Can you tell us what Vivian Green has been up to since releasing your self titled album Vivian?

Vivian Green: I have been being a mom. I haven’t been doing much but that. I have a son and he is actually six today (3/30). His name is Jordan and when he was born he had some issues with his health. We were in and out of the hospital, so I was focused on him. Once his health started to improve and he started meeting every milestone I went shopping for another deal because during that time I had left Sony Music. When I was able to focus on work again I had to find a new home and create a new album. I have been doing a lot of praying and I have grown a lot as a person. It’s been Jordan’s world this whole time. He is now in kindergarten and he is killing it, so I couldn’t be happier.

MMIM: We are glad to hear Jordan is doing well.
    Vivian Green: Thank you.

MMIM: Your new single “Beautiful” is just that. It’s a beautiful ballot. Can you tell our readers what the inspiration was behind that track?
Vivian Green: I was in a relationship and I ended that relationship. Instead of being angry about it like I have been on past records I wanted to write a break up song that focused on the positive take of a break up versus what I did on Emotional Rollercoaster. I didn’t want to make that same type of record and I wanted it to be really different. I didn’t know it would be a single so I am happy its doing well on the charts and that people get what I am trying to say. I am in a different place in my life where I don’t want to go negative all the time. If it’s a break up I won’t say anything bad about you, but I will say something nice. I also want the next girl to get treated better so she won’t leave him like I did.

MMIM: On your past albums A Love Story and Vivian you touched heavily on relationships and a lot of your songs women can relate to first hand. Will you be using that same formula on Beautiful or trying something different?
Vivian Green: This is a very positive album so you won’t see the same thing. When I wrote Emotional Roller Coaster and Gotta Go Gotta Leave I was very sad and all of that emotion came out in the songs. For example, Better Man gives both the woman and man’s side about why a relationship doesn’t work out. Then Save Me is like a fun uptempo reggae song, where it’s more about the feel than anything else. Then there is Caught Up and I am in the club with my girlfriends having girl talk in front of a small audience. The tone of these songs are more fun and not negative. I am in a different place right now and I hope people openly receive it. Of course I talk about love because I enjoy talking about love. There is also a song dedicated to my son called Jordan’s Song.

    Where Have They Been?

    May 4, 2008

Every now and then, we sometimes have talented artists take a brief hiatus and we wonder what are they doing. Are they preparing for a comeback, are they pursuing other ventures, what is keeping them away from making the music that you enjoy? Well we have some artists below that have been M.I.A for months, almost years…and it makes us wonder “Where have they been?”

Vivian Green blew us away with her debut single “Emotional Rollercoaster”, where she sings with so much emotion about a love that takes her to “highs and lows”. This single was immediately a hit on radio. Since then, Vivian has released two albums; most recently Vivian in 2005, which included the hit “Gotta Go, Gotta Leave (Tired)”.

Two albums later and we still have not heard anything from Vivian Green. Fans are patiently waiting another album and recently at a gig, Vivian promised that an album is in the works for this year. During her hiatus, Vivian has had a son and is also recording other tracks.

In 2004, she appeared on the De-Lovely Soundtrack singing “Love for Sale” and had a cameo in the movie. She also appeared on NBC’s American Dreams as Brenda Holloway, singing her version of Holloway’s hit “Every Little Bit Hurts”.

In 2005 she appeared on Cyndi Lauper’s The Body Acoustics CD singing I’ll Be Your River and Sisters Of Avalon.

In 2007 she appeared on Guru’s album Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: The Hip-Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future on the track “Free and Fine”.

Since 2001′s Now, Maxwell has kept quiet. The album included the single, “This Woman’s Work” and was certified Platinum as well as his other two albums (Embrya and Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite). Maxwell much anticipated album “BLACK Summers’ Night” had a scheduled release date of February 2007. More than a year later, we still haven’t heard from this Neo-soul genius.

Maxwell just continues to tease his fans. Last year, he released a snippet on his myspace page of his first single, “Pretty Wings”. (Click here to listen to Pretty Wings.) The album is in 3 parts with each disc to be released every year until 2010. But with the album still unreleased, the dates will definitely change. Below is a promo pic for the album.

By the way, Maxwell has a new look.

2005 was the last we heard from Faith Evans with her album, The First Lady. Faith was Bad Boy’s First Lady for a long time until she left the label in 2004 to join Capitol Records. Since then, she has released, A Faithful Christmas, her fifth studio album and a Christmas collection. She has also made lots of TV appearances.

Next on Faith’s list is a tell-all book scheduled to be released later this year. She will talk about her time at Bad Boy Records as well as her personal and professional relationships with Biggie and Diddy. Below is the book cover.
